Potential customers from time to time email me asking why does my Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet cost so much more then others. My jokingly but serious short answer is that it is NOT because of profit margin, just ask my wife. So, let me here, compare and explain major differences between litter box cabinets, and mine, the Out of Sight Litter Box vs. others. And why mine costs more.

NOTE: This Blog was written before I sold my business… the new Owners, Wood Chip, LLC believes and holds true my same values as expressed in this posting. When you read below, “I, My or Mine” in this Blog… that was me talking, writing, but my thoughts below are the same as the new Owner. Wood Chip LLC will now do all the manufacturing in Fenton, MO. The Out of Sight Litter Box will continue to be MADE-IN-AMERICA!

1.) My Out of Sight Litter Box is Made-In-The-USA. Which cost more for labor, manufacturing and included items. I help employ about a dozen American workers within the manufacturer that I use located in Mocksville, North Carolina. All of those employees are concerned about Quality Control, and will NOT let any defect pass by them. I have read a few times on reviews of the other cabinet products, that upon arrival, the product had broken areas, or out of place drilled holes, or hardware missing. Most other’s manufacturing is done overseas, I’m guessing, Vietnam, or China. Also, just a side note, their translations of the Assembly Instructions to English can be, misunderstood. My Assembly Instructions are, entertaining, informative with photos, drawings and easy to understand explanations. It cost more to be manufactured in the USA.

2.) Quality of materials and cost. I use high-grade California approved plastic coat melamine panels with all sealed panel edges. My panels are 5/8 inch thick. Others use 1/8 inch plywood pieces inserted into pressed cardboard frames, that are then lightly spray painted with a “Non-Toxic” paint. My panels will withstand “misses”… one reviewer of others I read stated he had to coat the inside of the cabinet with epoxy varnish to seal the “wood”. Other cabinets leave their cut panel edges raw cut, exposed. All my blind panels edges are edge banded to help seal them. Then I also include a large tube of clear caulking to be used on all the connecting panels for even more insurance to protect against “misses”. High-Quality manufactured panels cost more, plus the clear caulking ain’t cheap.

3.) I use hidden Pins and Cams to assemble my cabinet. Others use screws through the outer side panels. Others use a key latch to hold doors closed… I use a magnetic touch latch on my hidden storage area. My Top Lid closes and rests on rubber stops. The cost of my hardware is much more. Pins and cams hold much tighter over time. My cabinet does not wiggle, side to side after assembly, over time it remains sturdy. It is a structurally sound design. Others rely on the screws to be tight, and you can only tighten screws so much before they pull out of the pressed cardboard. My hardware cost more.

4.) Size does matter… my cabinet is larger. The Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet is 25 1/4 wide x 24 deep x 35 1/2 tall, outside dimensions. Double check a few sites and compare what dimensions are used for other cabinets, review site to site, and you will find the correct size, many others show sizing slightly larger then what is true. Check what the head room is in the other covers, your poor cat has less then 14 inches of head room to sit up right and do it’s business, unless it figures out how to stick it’s head out of the entrance hole. With three inches of litter my included litter box, in my cabinet your cat will have 16 to 17 inches of head room. I measured many cats, all different sizes, during my design process. I wanted happy cats, and I wanted cats to USE my cabinet. Also, the number of panels, 4 sides and top and bottom equals 6… my Out of Sight Litter Box uses 12 panels. Larger size and more panels costs more.

5.) With purchase my cabinet system, I include two (2) wax saturated custom fit (23 inch long x 13 inch wide x 15 inch tall) High-Sider Litter Boxes. The high sides insures that the cat can not “miss” over the edge of the litter box… and “miss” into the cabinet. Others DO NOT include a litter box/pan. You have to find go find one that will fit, and most of them have low sides. Plastic also absorbs odor… my wax saturated ones do not. They also last at least six months each, some one cat owners have used the same litter box for a year before changing to the second included one. Including two litter boxes, cost more.

6.) With my cabinet design, the cat walks into the cabinet on the ground level, hops up to the second level, makes it’s deposits, then hops down and walks out. Others: the cat has to aim at a small hole 24 inches off the ground, and jump into a dark enclosed area, or drop in head first into the box and litter, or jumps into the front entrance right onto the litter and then out of the litter back onto your floor tracking litter everywhere. The only light in most of those small covers are from the entrance only, which also is the only ventilation the cat, and litter area gets. Once the deposit is made, the cat pushes off from the soiled litter out of the entrance hole and onto your floor leaving a trail of litter behind. My Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet has two long openings across the front and the back, to let light into the top litter area, but they are designed for cross ventilation. Continue to read #7 below about how the cat exits my cabinet, leaving your floors clean and without tracked litter.

7.) I include “TraxTurf”, real name brand Astro-Turf. It last for years, and is washable. Two pieces, one long piece for the entrance area, and a second piece for the upper level. When the cat hops out of the litter box, it lands on the second level TraxTurf, which collects a lot of the litter, BUT, when a cat hops down… its paws open naturally, and all the litter falls out, into the lower TraxTurf and after the last few steps out of the cabinet, there will be no tracked litter in your home. It will take a few days for your cat’s “exit speed” to slow down to get the full effect… but on day one, you will notice less litter in you home, after a week, you will have forgotten how to use a broom. Unlike the other box covers, which you will find litter all over the landing zone from exit…. not to forget all the litter on the inside of those other pan covers. With mine, once a month or so, take the TraxTurf out and recycle the trapped litter back into the litter box. Oh, the included TraxTurf cost more, too.

8.) To clean the litter pan of other cabinets, you need to bend down or kneel on the floor, unlatch the door, then pull out the litter pan… which will also pull out all the litter that has fallen onto the floor of the cabinet… scoop the litter pan, then push the pan back into the cabinet, then sweep up the litter that has fallen out while pulling out the pan onto the floor, and latch the door closed, stand up, and continue to sweep up tracked litter from all over your home. With the Out of Sight Litter Box, you walk up, open the Top Lid, scoop, and walk away.

9.) Included with my cabinet is a Scoop, and Odor Absorber Holder. You get a nice compact handle scoop that has a large scoop area included with my cabinet. And an Odor Holder… which mounts on the Top Lid. It is designed to securely hold a box of “Arm and Hammer Fridge and Freezer” Baking Soda, the kind you use in your refrigerator. Pet urine starts to smell like ammonia very quickly. Bacteria starts breaking urine down immediately, urine contains nitrates, which are the essential building blocks of ammonia. And the ammonia is what smells. What neutralizes ammonia? Baking Soda. Baking Soda’s deodorization power is a result of its ability to absorb and neutralize odor, rather than only covering it up. This baking soda box holder mounts (screws included) under the Top Lid, each time the Top Lid is opened, the baking soda is mixed. And the baking soda box slides in and out easily for replacement. Change it once every few months, and my cabinet will not smell… and remember, a clean litter box has no odor. And the easier the cabinet is to clean… the more likely the human will clean it. Oh, the included Scoop and the Odor Holder adds to the cost, too.

10.) Packaging. Once you open my shipping box, which is made with a triple sided cardboard box… two layers on one side of the bottom and a third layer when the top slides on… plus foam on all four sides and bottom, plus another protective cardboard layer inside the foam… you get the idea? My shipping box was engineered so the product will survive shipping. And so all the panels arrive in purrrfect condition. My cabinet ships out at 95 pounds. Others will be about 30 pounds at most. Overseas manufacturers use single strength soft cardboard, the rips easy. If their product is damaged in shipping, you have to return it, and wait for another to be shipped out. I also include a page that shows how to reuse my shipping box top, and make it into the largest free cat toy your cat will have fun using. When your Out of Sight Litter Box arrives, it will be in ready to assemble condition. High-Quality packaging costs more.

My Testimonials, are just that. My customers send them to me… and include photos. And I post them on my website. Yea, I get a few (one or two a year) humans that have issues… but I take care of those human issues, and usually get their cats to use and enjoy the benefits of the Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet system. I don’t get complaints. The product arrives in purrfect condition… the assembly does take some time… but I only get one or two calls a year with any questions. I have perfected the Assembly Instructions, and have updated them over ten years, so they work, and are understandable. Once assembled, the cabinet is like fine furniture. An investment, yes, for some. But, I have customers that are still using the cabinet they purchased from 2003. My cost may seam high, but my profit margins are very low. Just ask my wife. HA. That is why I don’t, can’t sell on Amazon, they want more then I make. There just is not enough room to give any profit away. I can’t even drop ship for other companies, they want more then I make. I am proud to produce and sell a very high quality, well made, Made-in-the-USA product, that works and does what I designed it to do. As they say, “You get what you pay for”. And that is really true.

As for my shipping costs… yep, $84.00 is added to the price. (Note: FedEx raised rates again for 2021.) I am a little guy and have to pay for shipping. I do get a discount, but I don’t get a contract price of $X. a box, like the big guys. My box weighs 95 pounds. I pay $84. on the East Coast, and up to $125. to the West Coast. FedEx charges all the of us higher rates to make up the loss on all those $X. per box contracts. Nothing I can do about it… I have tried and contacted all kinds of companies to figure it out… but, there is just no way around it. So, I charge for shipping. But I know the box and product will arrive with no damage, due to the time and investment I have made into engineered packaging.

I hope this answers your questions. See.. this is true customer service. Try and get any of that when you call Amazon… or call those other companies If you are missing some hardware, they tell you to box up the whole product and ship it back and they will send you out another. Or please file a claim with USP because of a broken piece and they will handle the damage, and once they get the package back, they will issue you a refund, or ship you out another low quality product. I overnight missing hardware if that ever happens, or email Assembly Instructions if that happens. We are all human, and sometimes make mistakes, but I correct them ASAP! And my panels arrive without damage. I invented the Out of Sight Litter Box, designed it, engineered the shipping box, wrote the Assembly Instructions and even still package the hardware and cut the TraxTurf…. I used to do all the packaging in our garage, but finally my manufacturer does that. Happy wife, she gets to put her car in the garage now. HA.

Why does my cabinet cost more? And why is it worth more in value? I believe you should now understand why. All my best, with His Blessings, I look forward to your order, and I will NOT let you down.

“I just wanted to let you know how much I love your litter box! It is the most expensive litter box I’ve ever purchased, but it is worth every penny! Thank you for creating such an amazing product. I could see all the details that you’ve worked hard to create it.”

Every living thing has to, okay let’s just say it, poop or pee. But, leave it to humans to invent a better way “to go”. We all used “to go” outside. But as in all human reality… we think “there has to be a better way”. And so, the human cycle of the “better mouse trap” begins. But, (notice only one “t” ) thank goodness for all of us the mother of invention makes it easy on us humans now, with only a flush… rather than… let’s not “go” there. And now the hip new thing for us humans is the Squatty Potty, Google it. As for your cat’s business of where “to go” let me review below, in my opinion, what the best “places to go” that you have to choose from for your cat. What is the best cat litter box? I’ll keep this a short read… just in case you are “on the throne” you can finish by the time you are finished.

Natural?

Cats in the wild, feral cats, have the whole world as their place “to go”. But, (notice only one “t” again) they have their location “to go”… and return to it. The great outdoors is the first option for your domesticated house cat and many humans do – let the cats out. This way the human does not have to clean up after or even be involved. This may be the easy way out, but at what true costs? Increased chances of fleas, fights with other animals, fights with cars, and mean humans. Let’s consider safer indoor options. Enough said.

Simple Litter Pan?

Litter pans come is all sizes and are mostly made with plastic. They are about four inches tall and sit on the floor. If you have a cat, you started with one of these. Commonly as the kitten grows up, they start to fling the litter out of the pan over the low edge and all over the floor. Or they sit on the edge, and “miss” onto the floor. Then walk away tracking litter across your floor and onto where ever they are now headed to sleep for the rest of the day… your bed. Enough said.

Covered Litter Pan?

Being the human that you are, once you are sick of those litter pan issues, you head to the pet store looking for a better solution. The next logical and more expensive option is the covered litter pan. And now, you have the smell… that “oh, you have a cat” odor. Since the litter pan is covered, the ammonia smell builds within the cover. And since the pan has a cover, you no longer want to have to spend the extra time it takes to unlatch the cover, remove it, scoop, replace the cover so you just do not clean the litter pan as often. You also notice that after you do clean the litter pan, and wash it… that the plastic still smells even after your have washed it. Huh? Plastic is porous and absorbs odors. Which leads to your cat, who requires a clean place “to go” begins to leave you presents in hidden areas of your home. This new unit helps with the “missing” over the edge issue, but not the litter tracking. Enough said.

Litter Trap?

To stop the litter tracking problem. You return to the pet store, or these days you order online, a fancy litter stopping mat to place in front of the entrance to the covered litter pan. Only to later watch your cat, jump over it upon exiting. “Silly human” – your cat’s thought. Enough said.

On the Rim – Human Syle?

Then you have that light bulb moment! I use the toilet “to go” – I’ll just train my cat to use it too!

Once again on the internet you find the perfect solution. After spending more money, and hours of time trying to show and explain to your cat how “to go” human style… you realize that your cat’s natural instinct of digging is what triggers the “to go” and that cats have the need, instinct to cover after they “go”. You may want to go look around where the old litter pan was, I’m guessing there will be clean up required. Enough said.

High-Tech Litter Pan?

Not wanting to claim defeat, you hear about a “smart” litter pan. One that uses a pad that absorbs and stops the odor. The cat can once again dig in it, and it has even taller sides to keep the litter pellets inside the litter pan. Great concept. Now you only have to scoop poop… and once a week replace the absorbent pad. And replace the plastic pellets, and replace the pad, and replace the plastic pellets and pull out that stinky soaked pad. Remember that plastic absorbs. Sniff, sniff, sniff… what is that smell? You just replaced that pad yesterday. Enough said.

Automatic Self Scooping?

In your searching for – there has to be a better way – the human instinct is to think technology can fix this. So you research and purchase an expensive new fangled old style litter pan that automatically scoops or rolls or shifts for you, so you the human can do more important routine human things. And the cat can return to it’s normal “to go” routine. Now you won’t have to scoop daily, the machine will do it for you. Returning home from a long day at work you open the door and hear, “beep, beep, beep” and you track it down to the automatic litter box that is stuck. The clump was too big, to heavy, too sticky for the automatic answer to the litter box issues to do it’s job. So it’s telling you it wants you to clean it out and reset it. That task done you return to your life. Three days later, you smell – that smell – and discover that the litter tray that all the clumps and poop are dumped into is filled and overflowing. So much for automatic, the human must still be routinely engaged with the machine. Plus this machine is just as ugly a sight as the first litter pan you had but with pee in every opening and litter flung and tracked everywhere. Enough said.

Litter Box Cabinet?

This has to be the answer. Hide the damn thing! Put the litter box into a box so you don’t have to look at or see it anymore. All that mess will be inside the cabinet. Great idea why didn’t you think of that!?! No more looking at that mess! These litter box cabinets must work because there are so many different styles to choose from in the market place. The cat jumps in, does it’s thing and jumps out. You can put a rug in front of it to catch the tracked litter, litter box problems all solved. Until you try to clean it. You open the front door, pull out the litter pan and all that mess inside the cabinet is now on the floor, you scoop the pan, push it back in, get the broom, clean up the litter mess all while being bent over or on your knees and you still find litter on your chair., over the counters and in your bed. But the litter cabinet does looks good! Enough said.

The Out of Sight Litter Box!

I will now explain in my unbiased opinion (even though I did invent it) how the Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet system is the best cat litter box and how it works. And, it does work. I have also tried most of the litter pan options above… and if I had not already tried them, I purchased them to see what kind of quality they were, so to be sure my product was manufactured better. I ,too, am a customer, and a demanding customer, not unlike you. How it stared was research for a solution to stop tracked litter that was ruining our new wood floor. I looked at all the offerings on the web, and as I had said I even purchased a few of them, only to be very disappointed. Then one evening I watched one of our cats jump down off the sofa across the room, and the lighting was just right, that when the cat landed, I noticed that litter was on the floor where its paws had landed. Light bulb moment! The litter box had to be raised up so the cat would have to jump down! Plus this would make cleaning easier on me, not having to bend over or go to my knees to scoop. So I started to think about how, within a cabinet such a design could be developed. After figuring that out, I also realized that the litter mat, I call mine TraxTruf , could be placed inside the cabinet, so the cat would have to walk on it… not hop over it. And if the top of the cabinet could open up, that would make cleaning easy while standing upright. It was time to make one. And, it worked. No more litter tracking, my back no longer hurt from leaning over to scoop and our wood floors were saved! Litter box problems solved, not. I had used a regular low litter pan that still had it’s inherent issues. So, I invented the High-Sider (12 inch tall then, they are now 15 inches tall) Litter Pan. Over time, my friends wanted a cabinet like mine, and I personally made a few. Then turned the idea into a business. You can read “My Story” at this link on my website for all the details. LINK: https://outofsightlitterbox.com/my-story/ I know I said I would keep this Blog short… so I will stop here. And just add, I later learned from customers that their dogs could not get to the litter pan due to my ingenious cabinet design. Just call that serendipity. Take a look at my website, to see and learn more about my Out of Sight Litter Box and discover how it will solve all your litter box problems: hides kitty litter mess, stops cat litter tracking, keeps dogs out of the litter box and is easy to clean while standing upright. Oh, and with my included odor absorber holder, no more smell. Take a look: www.outofsightlitterbox.com Nothing more for me to say, it works. Don’t take my word for it, peruse my customer’s Testimonials: https://outofsightlitterbox.com/testimonials

Hate tracked litter all over your home? Me too! How to stop litter tracking… I have the answer for that! Hate litter mess? Me too! How to hide kitty litter mess… I have the answer for that! Can’t stand litter on your bare feet? Me too! Hate it when you find tracked litter on your bed sheets? Me too! Stop litter tracking… I have the answer to that! That is why I invented the Out of Sight Litter Box®, a unique hidden litter box cabinet that looks like fine furniture. The Out of Sight Litter Box® is a hidden litter furniture cabinet system that hides litter mess. It is the best litter box to stop litter tracking, keep dogs out and make cleaning easy all while standing up.

Let me guess… you have cat litter mess all around the kitty litter pan area, tracked litter throughout your home, that odor, and you hate having to kneel or bend to the floor to clean! And if you also have a dog, you want to keep the dog out of the cat litter pan! (Read my Dog Proof Litter Box blog) If you want to forget about any or all of these cat litter box issues, then my Out of Sight Litter Box® cabinet system is what you have been looking for. It is manufactured here in the USA! It is very high quality and it works!

My light bulb moment was when I watched one of our cats jump off the arm of the sofa, and upon landing the lighting was just right that I could see litter on the floor where the cat landed and with each step walking away. I had been searching for an answer to our litter box problems since we had installed new wood floors. I had purchased a few other litter box systems and cabinets in the hopes that one of them would work. NOT! But when my cat landed on the floor the idea came to me that the litter pan had to be raised. Off the floor. And that is where it all started.

I had purchased some of those litter mats… and put them next to the litter pan, but the cats would just jump over them. Dah? We had moved onto a covered litter pan to help hide and contain the litter mess, and it did that. But, each time I had to scoop… that meant unsnapping all the lid clips, and then lift the top off… that is when the litter up on the sides would fall out onto the floor. I’m sure you own one of those mini sweep hand brushes with the mini dust pan. Or have to wheel out the vacuum daily, so you do understand.

I then moved onto the system with the absorbing pad. That was returned. The smell was really bad. And the costs of the replacement pads too expensive. Next, I went high-tech automatic. Why scoop at all. Right? Wrong. The area inside it for the cat was way too small. My cats started to use it, but one could hardly fit. Plus, when the pee was too much in one spot the rake would get struck and the machine would just sit there and beep until I cleaned it back out, and reset it. And, you still have to empty out the small drawer everyday. Sold that one to a friend with only one cat. Note: it sold for much less than I paid.

I moved on to cabinets next… I purchased two different ones. The first was just a box that the litter pan was in. The cats would jump out and litter was everywhere. So then I tried that mat again… and the cats just jumped over the mat. Been there, tried that. The second cabinet had a wall baffle in it. It was made with painted pressed cardboard. Enough said. One “miss” over the litter pan edge, and that was trashed.

So, as “they” say… buy the best first. And don’t waste your money, over and over again. So you don’t have to look back, and say… what many of my customers have in their Testimonials: “I wish I would have purchased your Out of Sight Litter Box® first!”

Now to answer your litter issues questions. And explain how my Out of Sight Litter Box® cabinet system WORKS! The litter box is raised up within the cabinet on a shelf. The cats easily enter on the ground floor, they walk under the shelf that the litter pan is on, hop up 12 inches and then enter the litter box. By the way, you get two (2) litter boxes included with the cabinet order. The litter boxes are made with wax saturated cardboard and last at least six months each… the sides are 15 inches tall… no more “misses” over the edge. And all that litter mess from your deep diggers will stay within the litter box.

When the cat exits, the cat jumps out of the litter box, onto the first piece of TraxTruf, the turf is the real deal, astro-turf and it lasts for years. A lot of litter falls out into the TraxTurf right then. Next is the jump down onto the second piece of TraxTurf followed by a few more steps and out the cat goes. No more litter tracking. Once a month you can recycle all that trapped litter from the TraxTurf back into the litter box.

One minute in the morning, one minute at night is the only time you will spend on cat litter once you own the Out of Sight Litter Box®. Yes, the cabinet is not an inexpensive purchase, but the long term value is worth the cost. You will forget about cleaning up litter, you will stop looking for the next best thing, and you will stop wasting money on what you hope to be the next best thing. You will gain back all that lost time so you can hug your kitties more, and complete that to-do list you have been putting off. Hide cat litter mess, stop litter tracking, keep the dog out of the litter box and make cleaning the litter box easy on yourself. Order your Out of Sight Litter Box® today! www.outofsightlitterbox.com

Get Rid of Fleas are common in both cats and dogs. There are many easy things and natural home remedies you can try to help get rid of and prevent fleas on your cat(s). The most common symptoms that your cat(s) has fleas is scratching or you may also see your cat repeatedly biting, or nuzzling in different areas. You will also find little black specks around the eyes and just inside the ears (flea poop). Also take a look on the back of the neck and behind the ears, look on the belly of your cat and inside of both back legs for the fleas them selves, they are about the size of a sesame seed… and will be moving… running. Fleas repeatedly travel from the back to the front of your cat(s) in search of, moisture. Are you creeped out yet?

The best way to reduce the chances of your cat(s) from getting fleas is keeping them always indoors. Your cat(s) will be safer too, from those things called cars, and dogs, and other cats, and yes, fleas. I hear 50% of you humans yelling at me already: “No way! My cat(s) love being out doors”. I understand, but… I am heart broken each time I see a dead cat in the road… or see “Lost Cat” posters. Enough said. And yes, your cat(s) can get fleas indoors too… you can bring them indoors on your shoes and clothing. Or, if you come in contact with someone else’s pet that has fleas, they can and will jump onto you and travel with you to your home. Are you freaked out yet? Don’t be. Just become aware, and you won’t be living with someone else’s fleas.

Here are 8 easy things to help get rid of the fleas naturally:

1.) The “Pinch and Roll” method
Finger though your cats fur, looking for those pesky little fleas. Your cat will love you for the attention and will know you are trying to help while picking away. If you see one, go for it and pinch it with your forefinger and thumb. Hold it very tightly and then roll your finger and thumb together until dead. This may not seam like the most efficient way of killing fleas, but, each time you kill one, that is one less on your cat or in your home. Use a little bowl of water and dish soap to drop it (them) into… if the flea is still moving, the soap will finish it off. As time passes, you will get really good at it. And, it is a wonderful bonding time. Just do not eat the dead fleas… like you see monkeys do on those TV shows, that would be going way too far!

2.) A “Flea Collar” made with natural oils put on a bandana
All fleas will pass over the neck area of a cat daily, traveling from nose to tail. A “flea collar” is a great way get to fleas without having to reapply something topically, plus it keeps the flea control constant. Make a home-made flea collar with an olive oil or cedar oil and water mixture of 5 drops of oil and 2 tablespoons of water. Put the mixture on a small bandana (or cut cloth or your cat’s collar if the collar will absorb) and re-apply weekly.

EPA Cedarwood Oil safety information link: https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/reg_actions/reregistration/fs_PC-040505_1-Sep-93.pdf

3.) Help deter itching with Apple Cider Vinegar
To help your cat get temporary relief, mix apple cider vinegar and water in a proportion of 2:1. Put it in a spray bottle and mix before each use. Spray your cat’s fur with this solution and comb in gently. NOTE: Do NOT spray near eyes. Generally, this remedy works for almost 3-4 days. As mentioned before, if you see fleas… kill each one as you can, with a rolling pinch of your fore finger and thumb.

4.) White Vinegar can help remove and prevent fleas too
White vinegar is also one of the best remedies to remove fleas from cats. Add some 50/50 white vinegar to warm water and use it to bath your pet to prevent flea infestations. White vinegar is the best natural product to clean your house with too… use 50/50 with hot water on your hard surface floors and to clean your baseboards. Flees don’t like it, you will love your clean and fresh home.

5.) A Flea Comb is a great way to remove fleas
Slowly drag the comb across the hair close to the cat’s skin. Comb more in those areas where fleas are likely to hide such as around the neck, base of the tail, armpits and tummy. Once you find the flees, use step one, the Pinch method, to kill them. While you remove fleas, and kill them, drop them into a bowl of soapy water to drown them.

6.) Cedar Chips keep fleas away
Place cedar chips in bowls, around your pet’s bedding to keep fleas away. You can also place cedar chips outside around entrance areas to your home, to help keep them away.

7.) Dawn Dishwashing bath
Dawn dishwashing liquid is also effective for repelling and killing fleas. Just add a few drops of the blue-colored dawn dishwashing soap in regular bathing warm water. Bathing your cat? Yea, make sure your cats nails have been clipped before you try it… but if you can work out a deal (meaning your cat gets wetter than you do) it is a sure way to get those fleas off, or kill (drown) them, I’m talking about the fleas. If you have a double sink… fill both sides with warm water, add the Dawn to one side… then hold your cat in the soapy water, and rub the fur to get wet. If you can keep your cat in the water long enough, the fleas will all start to appear above the water level. Use the Pinching Method in option 1 to insure their death. (Note: keep your cats head out of the water.) Once you are truly loosing the battle, lift your cat out, “ring out” as much soapy water that you can and move to the rinse water side. Be very sure that you rinse your cat thoroughly. Then wrap your cat with a big towel and hold on tight to dry. Editors note: it may take your cat a few days to “love you” after this ordeal, but your cat will feel better and the fleas will be gone. Hint, use food to reestablish your relationship.

8.) Make sure to keep your floors clean to prevent the growth of fleas
It is important to maintain a clean and hygienic home environment to avoid the growth of fleas. Use vinegar or lemon solution for washing floors. Use a gallon of hot water and add four finely chopped lemons in and mix well. Use this solution to wipe the floor. Or use a 50/50 hot water and vinegar solution to clean floors. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Did I say vacuum? Vacuum daily for a week if you have carpet! By doing so, you will rid the carpet of fleas, and flea eggs. Also sprinkle salt directly on the carpet to kill (dry out) flea larvae and eggs of these nasty pests. The next day when you vacuum again, the salt will be picked up with the fleas and eggs.

After you have done all these ideas, you may change your mind about letting your cat go back outside to collect more fleas… and then have to start these processes all over again. And that brings me back to my second paragraph about not letting your cat out doors. My main point of this blog. LOL. Keep your cat safe! And flea free! www.outofsightlitterbox.com

Our cats have many fun and adorable behavioral traits, two are purring and kneading. One behavior is not, that is digging deep into to the litter box and flinging litter all over, more about that later. When our cats start to purr or knead us, it makes us as humans feel as good as it does them, which is wonderful… depending if their claws aren’t too sharp or depending on which tender body part they are pushing on! Whether you are a new or veteran cat parent to a young or old kitty, there is a good chance you have witnessed or experienced kneading. Most cat parents have also noticed their (young or older) kitties sucking on soft fabrics. Both these behaviors are instinctive and have their roots in early kitten-hood.

Kneading has a purpose for kittens

Kneading is the act of a cat pressing it’s paws into a soft surface in an alternating motion. Kittens start to knead before they are even able to get around on their own while nursing from their mother. A nursing kitten instinctually kneads to help stimulate the mother’s milk production. While it is certainly common among kittens to knead, not all cats keep doing it as they get older. When cats knead a warm, soft surface, such as laundry or bedding fresh from the dryer, it is because they associate the soft warmth with the comfort of nursing. Why do they continue to knead past kitten-hood? Older cats associate the motion of kneading with that memory which brings them joy.

Cats knead to show affection

If your cat is curled up and kneads on you while you’re petting your kitty, it’s returning the affection and telling you it loves you right back. Unfortunately, this can be quite painful, since the happier kitty gets, the harder kitty will dig in with it’s sharp claws or push deeper and deeper. Try placing a thick, soft barrier between the cat and your lap, or your tender body part… or gently place kitty on it’s back and pet the belly if it all gets too intense. Kneading can also be a cat’s way of marking the surface it kneads. Human, I mark you are mine. This is because the kneading action activates scent glands located inside the soft pads on the bottoms of kitty’s paws.

Sucking, or “Wool Sucking”

The act of a kitten or cat sucking on fabric of some kind is actually known in the Cat World as “wool sucking”. Some cats will choose clothing, bedding or another fabric item belonging to the person to whom they are most attached or bonded. If you leave your closet door open when not at home, you may find all your socks, or underwear carried and dropped in locations all over your home. Always a fun find when you first get home or those times you have unexpected guests. Note to self: keep closet door shut and underwear in closed drawer or closed hamper. Cats who engage in wool sucking tend to be those who were weaned prematurely. They suck on soft fabrics to soothe stress or anxiety or to relieve boredom. Additionally, if your cat sucks on your clothing while on your lap or bedding while on your bed, kitty is expressing affection for you. Basically, you have become kitty’s parent. Wool sucking is far less common than kneading, but both are a form of expressing affection in the Cat World. Consider yourself blessed… although it is a curse to your favorite sweater.

Cats love to stretch – kneading is just another way to do so

Cats are natural born stretchers and a routine we humans should all learn from. They love to work out all the muscle kinks left over from napping. Kneading is just another way to stretch out those long arms and paws, until that next nap.

Cats knead as way to soften up a comfortable bed

Cats in the wild like to lay down on a soft, comfortable surfaces to either sleep or give birth. By kneading down tall grass or leaves, cats are able to rearrange and soften up a comfy spot to lay down on and also clear off the surface of unwanted pests under foliage. You might see your kitty kneading on it’s bed or your bed before lying down, doing so, relaxes muscles, prepares the bed with kitty’s scent and makes sure all those lumps are worked out and ready for yet another nap.

All this talk of napping has made me tired too, how about you? Go find your cat… take your paws (fingers) and knead on kitty’s side… once you hear purring, it’s time for both of you to get some Zzzzzzzzzzz’s.

Kneaders and Deep Diggers

No nap for you? All that kneading, sometimes transfers to the litter box. You may find you have a deep digger, a cat that digs to China and flings litter all over the place before “going”. If you find more litter on the floor than in the litter pan you should take a few minutes and visit my website. My Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet with it’s two included High-Sider litter boxes will stop all that litter mess, and the cabinet is designed to stop litter tracking. No more wasting time cleaning up litter from all over your home. A few minutes reviewing my website will save you hours of time sweeping or vacuuming. www.outofsightlitterbox.com

I always miss my cats whenever I am away from home during the day. But, for over the past two months, I’ve been away from home dealing with family health issues, moving my Mom into a skilled nursing center. Everything worked out for the best, but, I really did missed our four cats. I missed the 6 a.m. hair baths and eye licks awaking me to feed them. I missed the crying at 2 a.m. with the gift of a missing sock brought to my chest. I missed the litter box deposit that makes you hold your breath… well, maybe not. But I did miss the unconditional love, the reassuring purrs and the hugs.

1.) The Baby Hug

My favorite cat hug is the baby hug. Support your cat like a newborn baby, upside down, holding your cat’s head within your elbow and hips with a gentle hand and the body of your cat supported against your chest and forearm. This allows your second hand to give a head rub or stroke the tummy, or play with paws. What is nice about this hug is that your eyes can lock. You can each read each others emotions and give eye kisses (slow blinks) back and forth. Unless, you have the “head hold” going on… that is when you cover your cats head and eyes with your hand and gently hold on. You can rub an ear at the same time. Purring is always evoked. Most cats love to have their paws held inside your fist of fingers, using your thumb to rub their toes. The tummy can be a touchy area… either they will or they won’t like finger noodling. Start with just laying your hand flat over the belly and chest, as they both start getting warm, test your limits. Chest bone scratching is usually followed by their head slowly falling backwards until sleep happens.

2.) The Tailgating Zone

Most cats are sensitive about anyone touching their tails, which are a part their self righting rudder system. If you start early as a kitten, running the full length of the tail though your hand they won’t be so picky as an adult. The one secret spot for scratching is right on top of the backbone at the hing of the tail. Try short all finger scratches on the backbone and then just up the tail a few inches. If you get tip toes on the back paws… you have found the spot. The back pat, in the same area may also be a winner. You will find out fast it your cat likes it, or not. Hint: With any of these loving suggestions, if your cat draws (your) blood, I would recommend not pursuing any further with that technique. While you may find some longhaired cats enjoy having their plumy tails petted, most domestic shorthairs won’t, so interpret your cat’s signals, so play and pull with caution.

3.) The Back Stroke

While we are discussing “that end” of the cat, stroking your finger along your cat’s backbone may bring satisfying attention as it arches in pleasure. To enhance more of that good loving feeling between you both, work your hand(s) back and forth along the full length of your cat’s back, this works while it is standing or lying down. An allover relaxation will occur… just like a back rub does for us humans.

4.) The Chin Rub

No matter how big; lions, tigers, jaguars, or small: the teeniest of newborn kittens, teenage kitties to aged house cats, all cats love having a chin rub. Just watch their eyes close in bliss and hear that purr start up. Start with the easy one handed multi finger chin rub. Then go for both cheeks with both your hands and all your fingers. Watch the nose scrunch closed. Then bring your one thumb forward, and rub the round of the chin. For added bonding, use your fore fingers and rub your cats lips. Never thought of doing that have you, give it a try.

5.) The Tummy Rub

Some cats love having their tummy’s rubbed when they are lying on their backs, paws up. You know you have their trust, when your cat exposes their most vulnerable area. Start with some light finger presses… if all four paws grab hold of your hand and biting starts… you will have to determine if that is play, or stay away. Press your hand lightly down over the tummy area, and with your other hand start a head rub, to relax your cat into enjoying your tummy exploration. Your cat will tell you when it has had enough, so beware of a sudden changes in catatude, or when purring begins, continue.

6.) The Lap Cradle

Lay your cat long wise between your legs, with it’s head by your knees. You can raise and lower each opposing leg to gently rock your kitty. In this position, paws up, both your hands are free for ear rubbing, forehead scratching, paw holding and tummy rubs. Your cat will be so relaxed, that a full body massage will be possible.

7.) The Sleeping Dreamer

Cats in deep sleep with their running paws and flicking whiskers are fun to watch. We as humans imagine them running though wide open fields, chasing that elusive mouse or nipping at ribbons blowing in the breeze when truly they are just showing their frustrations of not having thumbs to get that can of food open. If you decide to wake that dreaming cat, do so tenderly with a long slow back rub. Waking from subconscious sleep your cat will take a few moments to return to this World, the deep purr will let you know you have connected.

8.) The Over The Shoulder

This is the hug of all cat hugs. Satisfying for both you and your cat, easy on both and a wonderful way to exchange purrfect love. Holding your cat chest to chest with your cat looking over your shoulder. You will know when your cat is “in the zone” when it straightens one of it’s front legs so it sticks straight out, paw limp, and you stop in place from walking from point A to point B, and forget where point B was. That, is true love.

Point B

When you come back to reality, and remember that the location of Point B was the litter box, and the reason was for cleaning. Give my Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet some consideration. The high quality Made-In-America cabinet system hides the litter mess and stops litter tracking. You will no longer be spending time cleaning up all that scattered and tracked litter, giving you and your cat all the more time to hug, play together and nap together. The cabinet also keeps dogs and young children out of the litter box. Keeping both healthy and making dog kisses all the more enjoyable. Plus, you will scoop while standing up, like a human should. Not kneeing to the floor or sweeping anymore. So, put your cat on your lap as you sit with your computer (or smart phone) and take a look at my website: www.outofsightlitterbox.com and then you and your cat will have more quality time to spend hugging together.

“Ooh that smell, can’t you smell that smell?” No, I’m not quoting the lyrics to the song preformed by the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynrd – for those of you that remember the release back in 1977. No, I’m talking about that dreaded lingering, pungent odor of ammonia, that cat urine smell… that smell all us cat owners hope visitors won’t smell when they first walk into our home.

What Causes Cat Litter Odor?
Cat urine starts to smell like ammonia very quickly. Included in my Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet package is a baking soda box holder that mounts (screws included) under the Top Lid, each time the Top Lid is opened, the baking soda is mixed. A baking soda box slides in and out easily for replacement. My Odor Absorber Holder can be use with any litter box cabinet. You will need to pick up a few boxes of “@rm and h@mmer firdg and frezor” baking soda boxes to use with the holder.

The Easiest Way Of Getting Rid Of Cat Litter Smell
The fact is, cat poop stinks! Most cats cover up, some “dump and run”. Nothing is going to get rid of that odor except by removing the source Keeping the litter box clean is essential, by removing litter urine clumps and of poop. My Out of Sight Litter Box is designed to be easy to clean. Just walk up, open the Top Lid, scoop, and walk away. A minute in the morning and a minute at night, and your cat and your nose will both be happy.

Natural And Effective Clean Up Remedies For Cat Urine
Clean up the “miss” with paper towels first, blot clean as much as possible. Then, use white vinegar. Mix 2 parts water, 2 parts white vinegar and clean the area well. Once you clean up the pee area, I have found a light spray over of Windex also helps freshen hard surfaces. For carpets or rugs another mix that works is: 1 cup hot cup water, 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and 3 tablespoons of Dawn Ultra dish detergent. Leave that mixture on the soiled carpet or rug area for about 10 minutes. Blot up and then clean with a damp towel, sprinkle baking soda over the area, and cover area with a towel over night and then vacuum.

I missed my self imposed Blog deadline last month… and for not a good reason. Our cat Casper, a neutered male, had a urinary track blockage scare. Even with four cats, I can tell you who used the litter box by the location from where they each “go” – I am very aware of urinary track issues. Mia our big tuxedo girl, goes dead center in the box, not very deep, and well, she is a big girl, enough said. Callie, our little fluffy all white, she goes in the corner furthest away from the litter box entrance and well, she is the one that dumps and runs… never covers up! Buddy, our feral, he digs to China, all the way to the bottom of the litter box and then has to cover up with all the rest of the litter left in the box. And then there is Casper. My big all white boy, (brother to Callie) who follows me everywhere and is always on my lap. He has to be the first one to use the litter box right after or during the time I am scooping and cleaning. He “goes” right by the entrance door.

“Any wet Brand would be better than dry”

After we moved to Rock Hill, SC, from Boca Raton, FL, we had to locate a Veterinarian. While in Florida, we had Dr. Hugo, at The Cat Hospital (Deerfield Beach, FL), more than a 30 minute drive away from where we lived, but, a cat only practice. Spoiled we were! Our new area had many Vet clinics, and I visited them all due to my litter cabinet business (Out of Sight Litter Box, Inc.) dropping off advertising flyers and posters, but also to check them out as for our potential new Vet. But they were all dog, plus cats practices. Now, I have nothing against dogs, but if you are a Cat Person, dogs change things… and when you bring in your cat for an appointment … in a cage … and a nosey dog runs up and barks and sniffs at your cat, well, it is extremely alarming for your cat, and for you.

Wet Cat Food vs. Dry Cat Food

Back to the reason of this post… I have always been a wet cat food person since day one with my cats. It just seamed right that since cats, (including all cats species) ate meat while hunting, so that wet (canned) high protein food would be normal for them. Have you ever seen a Lion eating grass? rice or vegetables? no… they hunt for meat… moist, wet, meat. But, our new local Vet recommended a new dry kibble food manufacturer by a new company (with the color of the sky in the name). The Vet gave us information/advertising sheets, and added since our two new white kitties had such sensitive stomachs, that is would be better for them, and recommended a diet variety for our, chunky Mia. So, we gave both dry foods a try. And yes, I have to admit it made my life much easier… just fill up the bowl on a high counter for the kitties, and scoop in the measured amount for Mia twice a day, and walk away. No cans to open and to wash out. I did have to fill up the water bowls more often, but all seamed just great. But after two years, Mia had still not lost any weight eating her diet food, and then the issue that put my Blogging on hold… I noticed Casper was having an issue urinating.

Urinary Track Issues for Cats

Casper jumped into the litter box as I was cleaning, and just sat there. Pushing, as I could see him struggling to go. And, then when he left… there was only a very small clump area, not the scoop full he would normally leave behind. Knowing that male cats are pron to get urinary track infections and or blockages, I went to the web first to research my fears. And then after having a bad last experience at our dog (and cat) Vet’s office… I searched for a Cat Only Vet in our area and there was one, but the office was over 45 minutes away, in Charlotte, NC. The 4 Seasons Cat Hospital. It was time for a change, and that long drive, well it turned out very worth it.

After I called and made an appointment for the next day to bring in Casper, Dr. Moses called back and asked if I could bring Casper in right away. Long story, short, my boy is just fine now. After giving him fluids, a few days of pills, and a shot twice a day, he is now “going” like a race horse once again. We, he, was very lucky, it was the start of a blockage, that could have been, a major problem. And, after listening to Dr. Moses’ history about the food we had been feeding our kids, we were not alone with the issues. She too recommended going back to wet canned food, “any wet Brand would be better than dry”. All our cats love it! And Mia is already losing weight and becoming more playful.

I have done more research on the wonderful internet, and found many sites with pet owners telling the same or sad and painful stories of their not so lucky pets regarding dry food. It seams that dry food for cats, is becoming a big health issues. Now, don’t just take my word for it… look into it yourself. I can personally say that our 4 cats seam happier, more playful, love eating time and are drinking much less water. Cat’s normally don’t drink water, they get most of their fluids from eating prey… as they do in the wild. But you’ll find more out about that as you do your own research. Here are a few links to sites I found with information that I believe you will find very interesting regarding… Wet Cat Food vs. Dry Cat Food:

Today is February 29th. One extra day, twenty four extra hours. Known as a leap day or leap year day in the Gregorian calendar, it is a date that occurs in most years that are divisible by 4, such as 2012, 2016, 2020. A leap day is observed because a complete revolution around the Sun takes slightly longer than 365 days. The added day compensates for this lag, realigning the calendar with the Earth’s position in the solar system; otherwise, seasons would occur in a different time than intended in the calendar year. Or simply put… it’s one extra day, twenty four extra hours for you that you didn’t have last year. Stop wasting time, stop cleaning up tracked litter mess.

Time Is Most Valuable.

Time. Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you have lost it, you can never get it back. Time is most valuable. More so than money, fame or stuff. If you could turn back the hands of time, or had one wish for one hour, how would you use it? I’ll bet it would be used to be with someone, someone special. My dad passed away five years ago of a sudden heart attack, and I am crying now, just as I type this… knowing I would spend that time, even if only a minute, hugging him and telling him that I love him. I miss him every day. For my wife… February 29 is a very uniquely meaningful day, it was on a 29th day of February in 2000 that her Mom passed away of lung cancer. I don’t mean this read to be sad, but only to illustrate and express how truly important time is.

I also think about my first cat. He loved me no matter what. While walking back to my college apartment, from the movie theater, in the rain, I heard a very loud cry, a cry that a kitten makes in distress… ehmmm!? ehmmm!? And there, was this drenched tiny wet kitten, with the stub of a tail pointing straight up. He was wobbling back and forth, shaking so much that it could not even move forward. I looked all around to see if I could see a Momma Kitty anywhere in sight, but it was there alone. I picked it up with one hand and warmed it close to my heart under my jacket. I named him Joshua, because of his loud meow like a trumpet, Joshua 6:1-27. We spent 15 wonderful years together, I’ll tell more about those years later on… but, I’d love to have more time with him again too.

Things We Have To Do.

Our day to day lives are filled with responsibilities and chores. Things we have to do, and things we do that if we would only take a second look at, we might change to regain some of that lost time. Time is precious, so waste if wisely. Let me take a lighter turn here, and say, that I have owned my Out of Sight Litter Box for almost 15 years now… and, have truly forgotten how much time, wasted time, I used to spend cleaning up litter from all over our home. But, one thing I do remember to do is, every time I scoop that litter cabinet clean and walk away, I walk right over to one of our 4 cats and give a big hug and then spend some special time with each cat. Time that I would have otherwise spent sweeping, or cleaning up messy tracked or scattered cat litter. I now use that quality found time spending it loving on my cats. Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important. You have to make time for the things you love, stop cleaning up litter mess… Go hug your cat!

Why talk about dogs on a cat blog? Well, because 50% of all dog owners, also have a cat. And we have all heard that dogs steal cat poop… I’ll give my opinion on the best dog proof litter box in a minute. It’s estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-47% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 30-37% have a cat. (Source: APPA, American Pet Products Association) That is a lot of dogs and cats!

Now, if you are a cat owner, and you’ve been thinking about getting a dog, I have a great website for you to go visit, a site where new dog owners can learn what to expect with new puppies and how to teach them the rules of your home. www.newdogowners.com

But, if you are one of those dog owners, that has a cat… you know where I’m going with this thought… dogs eat kitty “treats” out of the kitty litter box. With regards to coprophagia (the fancy big word for eating poop) … your new big word for today … it is big time disgusting! Not only can eating cat poop cause digestive upset for dogs, but it can also be a source of transmission for intestinal and other parasites that can truly harm your dog.

Now I don’t want to make too big of a deal of this. Dogs eat cat feces all the time and the majority of them never develop any problems. If you suspect a medical problem and especially if the dog is showing any symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, of course see your veterinarian. But, in my opinion, the number one reason to stop the behavior is the “yuk” factor. Do you really want your dog to snack from the litter box and then give you or someone else a big old kiss or a face lick? I didn’t think so!

Tips for a Dog Proof Litter Box.

I’ve read many customers emails of all kinds of different set ups to keep dogs out of their litter boxes… the most common one is; putting the litter pan in the bath tub of the second bathroom, and then putting a chain on the door, to keep it from opening too wide, so the dog can’t get in. Okay, you lose the use of your second bathroom and then you have to fight your way in to clean the litter box. Yea, right.

I have a better idea… the easiest way to keep your dog from eating cat poop is to remove the opportunity. You need the best dog proof litter box… Out of Sight Litter Box is out of sight, out of mind. Because cats have more agility and flexibility than dogs, my patented cabinet design keeps the cat litter box out of reach of most mischievous dogs as well as inquisitive children. With the litter box located on the second shelf, most dogs can not bend to get up there. Problem solved. Go kiss your dog! Plus, you get all the other benefits of the Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet design.

Why Do Dogs Eat Cat Poop? Why ARE They So Fascinated? Your dog thinks they just undertook a stealth mission. But as you watch them lick their chops, you notice something suspicious. Are those pieces of LITTER? You know what that means: they’ve been helping themselves to the cat’s litterbox again. It’s so disgusting! And the expression on your cat’s face lets you know they aren’t impressed, either. Why does this happen?
