Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Out of Sight Litter Box, Inc.?
Out of Sight Litter Box, Inc., is incorporated and so is a Corporation, but it is “me” who is responsible for, and proud of, the quality control of this product. I could use the words “us” or “we” or “our” to describe “the company” in all the web site text, but the truth is, I have worked too long and too hard, for you to think you are just dealing with another big uncaring company – you are dealing with me, Paul I. Pettys, “Cat-man-doo-doo” the Inventor and the one who will be taking care of your order. You are the link to my next sale. And I want you to be happy with my Out of Sight Litter Box®, and the service you get.
Is the Out of Sight Litter Box® difficult to put together?
My unique cat litter box cabinet has been designed to be easy to assemble. At first assembly may seam overwhelming, but, just follow the step-by-step photo instructions that clearly show, and explain each step. My wife was the test assembly guinea-pig, it took her over an hour (I can do it in 45 minutes). All you will need is a Phillips screwdriver, a small hammer, and maybe your fist.
What is the Out of Sight Litter Box® made out of?
My panels are 5/8 inch thick high grade California approved plastic coat melamine. This surface allows easy cleaning and repels litter pan “misses” for hours. Most of the less expensive litter box cabinets on the market use hot-pressed cardboard that has been painted, or a paper coated chip board. All my panel edges are “edge banded” to help seal them from moisture absorption. Even the “blind” edges of my panels that you don’t see after assembly are edge banded, I also include a large tube of clear caulking. Most of the less expensive litter cabinets on the market leave the “blind” edges bare. When a litter pan “miss” happens, that moisture seeps between the panels, and is absorbed into the panel. That smell, will never go away, and that cheaper cabinet is now, trash. That is why all my panel edges are banded. It takes more time, and costs more, but makes a big difference. My back panel is made from the same panel as all the others so the back look as good as the front and sides. This allows the cabinet to be free standing, it can be anywhere in a room. (Cheaper cabinets usually use nailed on cardboard for the back.) My front, and back panels have also been designed to allow air flow and light into the cabinet area. All this extra quality may explain why my first cabinet manufactured in 2003 is still in use today!
How will your cat(s) know where to find the kitty litter pan?
If you plan on placing your Out of Sight Litter Box® in a different room or location than your present litter pan is now, I recommend that the pan being used now slowly be moved towards where the new Out of Sight Litter Box® will be located. When getting started with the Out of Sight Litter Box I recommend using the litter from your old litter pan, your cats nose will know that they have “been there, done that” and it is the place to “go”. Open the top lid and lovingly place your cat onto the litter and slowly close the top lid. Your cat will sniff around, then find its way out of the cabinet. That’s it. Once out, going back in when nature calls will be routine. “Getting Started” is all explained in the included step-by-step photo assembly instructions. Some cats may require a repeated “reminder” at first. Most cats figured it out very quickly on their own.
Will your cat actually fit inside the cabinet?
My Out of Sight Litter Box® floor level cat entrance opening is 9 x 12 inches, and the opening area up to the shelf is 9 x 9 inches. Both are much larger than standard pet doors. My tests have shown, and customer comments have proven, that most cats will fit. (Cats up to 22 pounds do fit – NOTE; large/long Maine Coons and Norwegian (Siberian) Forest Cats may not.) Because of my patented design features, the Out of Sight Litter Box® also helps keeps the litter box out of reach of mischievous dogs or inquisitive children. Also a very important measurement is the inside “head room” for your cat, my Out of Sight Litter Box® offers a full 18 inches while sitting in the litter box. You won’t find that with other cabinets!
What is TraxTurf™ ?
TraxTurf™ is a soft and flexible grass like mat that I incorporated in two locations of my Out of Sight Litter Box® to remove kitty litter from your cats paws. TraxTurf™ traps and holds litter that would otherwise be tracked throughout your home. TraxTurf™ is the high quality, real deal, purchased directly from the patented Astro-turf® manufacturer. TraxTurf™ is easy on your cat’s paws and easy to clean, you will be surprised when you pick up the TraxTurf™ mat and recycle all the collected litter back into the litter box. If ever soiled, just wash the TraxTurf™ with soapy water, let dry (put them in the sun) and replace. TraxTurf™ will last for years of daily use. Your cat jumps down on exit which opens paws naturally and allows litter to fall out and be trapped in TraxTruf™ that would otherwise be tracked throughout your home.
Will my litter pan work?
You won’t need your old litter pan anymore, when you purchase my Out of Sight Litter Box® cabinet, you get TWO (2) of my unique custom fit High-Sider™ litter boxes. To insure a dry and clean cabinet, I came up with the High-Sider™ litter box, it is a custom fit litter box made just for the Out of Sight Litter Box®. The High-Sider™ fits tightly into the cabinet and is 23 inches wide x 13 inches deep x 15 inches tall, no kitty is going to “miss” over the top of this litter box! The High-Sider™ box works great for multi-cat households. Take a look at the Order Page to read more details! Also my High-Sider™ Litter Box is great to use as a stand alone litter box (with no cabinet) while traveling.
What about daily maintenance?
As long as you have a cat, you will have to clean (in some way) the kitty litter box daily. No matter what kind of pan, or cabinet or system you use. So, why not save time and make it easier on yourself. My Out of Sight Litter Box® has been designed to make daily cleaning easy on you with its lift top lid. Scoop and walk away. (I recommend using your old plastic grocery bags to scoop clumps and waste in to, then knot closed and discard properly.) My Out of Sight Litter Box® was designed to be used with most types of litter; however, I recommend a good quality clumping litter. I have received many emails about how well the new crystal litters work and also the natural pine type litters too. It is important that you remove cat litter waste daily, and dispose in an appropriate manner. From time to time the litter collected by the TraxTurf™ mats will need to be recycled into the litter box. During those times, any stray litter particles can be removed by vacuum or small brush. Clean the outside of the Out of Sight Litter Box® cabinet as any other furniture.
Can kittens use the Out of Sight Litter Box®?
Many cats act like kittens, but kittens are not big enough to gain access to the shelf and litter box area (a 12 inch hop) to use my Out of Sight Litter Box®. You will know when your kitten is ready for my product when that little one jumps up on your chair or lap, instead of climbing up your leg. On a personal note, our two rescue kittens (Casper & Callie) started using our Out of Sight Litter Box® at just past three months old.
What happens if my cat won’t use it?
If your cat presently uses a covered litter box he/she should have no problem adapting to my Out of Sight Litter Box®. If an open litter pan is used, most cats will adapt by leaving the top lid open for a short period of time. If you plan on placing your Out of Sight Litter Box® in a different room or location than your present litter pan is now, I recommend slowly moving that pan towards where the new Out of Sight Litter Box® will be. Truthfully, since 2003 I have had only a few returns do to the cat not wanting to use the cabinet. But, if you or your cat are not satisfied, you may have a friend who will purchase it from you at full price, or you may return the Out of Sight Litter Box® following my Return Policy found on the Policies Page.
What cat litter do I use or recommend, and how much?
I use, Arm & Hammer® Super Scoop FRAGRANCE FREE. It is low dust, and clumps very well, and it has baking soda mixed into it. “They” @arm&hammor, would not allow me to use their Trade Name or include a box of “fridg&frezzor” with my Odor Absorber, but, I still use and recommend their cat litter and baking soda. It’s good stuff! Your (included with order) two (2) coated-one-side cardboard High-Sided™ Litter Boxes will last at least six (6) months each. When it is time to replace the first litter box, scoop the litter clean first, then scoop out most of the remaining litter using an old cup, dust pan, etc. That will make the older litter box weigh less, and easier to lift out of the cabinet. Reuse the litter in the next litter box. I use about 3 inches of litter. That is about 30 pounds in the High-Sider™ Litter Box.
Is the Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet wheelchair accessible?
YES! With the litter pan located on a raised shelf inside the Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet, scooping the litter pan is accessible if seated in a wheelchair. Daily cleaning, scooping can be done by raising the Top Lid and reaching in, which makes the cabinet a wheelchair accessible litter box.
